The Benefits of Soft Water

Approximately 70% of the UK population is provided with water which is categorised as “hard”. Hard water causes scale in heating systems, scum on baths and sinks, and increases soap and detergent usage. The cost savings, energy efficiency and environmental benefits are well established. But anecdotal evidence, as well as epidemiological studies in the UK, Japan and Spain, have indicated an association between water hardness and childhood eczema. A government funded trial is currently being conducted by the Centre for Evidence Based Dermatology at Nottingham University to determine the benefit of softened water to children with eczema. Over the last 2 years, water softeners have been installed in the homes of 336 children with eczema and their condition monitored by a local nurse. Tony Frost will present the benefits of softened water and an update on the progress of the Nottingham research.

Tony Frost is Director of Aqua Focus Ltd, a water treatment consultancy business which he established in 1995. Based in the UK, the consultancy provides an international service to the water treatment industry on product design, manufacture, marketing, testing, standards, regulations and certification.  He is also currently Technical Director of the UK Water Treatment Association amongst other positions.
